Below are some real stories from actual members about their experiences at CrossFit Aspire.
“Crossfit has changed my life. The obvious can be stated, Crossfit WILL make you look better. I lost 15 pounds and have maintained a weight that I was in high school without the dreaded word “dieting”. Though I look better that’s not the gift that Crossfit has given me. Crossfit ended the pressures to be “thin” and to lose weight and to be a size 0 that I was plagued with most of my adult life. I was obsessed with the scale and with Crossfit I no longer need one. My focus shifted from the weight on the scale to the weight on the bar; how much I can deadlift, clean and push-press. My progress was not measured by the pounds I was losing but the ability to do pull-ups with a band, to kipping pull-ups and then being able to do dead hang pull-ups.
Crossfit has made me believe in myself. WOD’s that looked impossible I would accomplish one rep at a time. I never thought I would be able to ever RX a WOD and now I can do most WOD’s as RX’d. Crossfit has given me confidence to believe in myself, that if I work hard I can accomplish anything I put my mind and body too. I’ve learned the word “can’t” should never be spoken at Crossfit, can’t is limiting and I’ve proven to myself that I can, maybe not today or tomorrow but eventually I will be able to succeed at the next Crossfit goal. Bring on the muscle-ups!”

“At 48, I was a long-time runner and local gym member who knew I wasn’t getting the most out of my workouts. I wanted to incorporate weight lifting and other strength exercises into my routine, but was afraid to do it on my own because of back problems. Also, the free weight area of my gym was intimidating — the muscleheads frowned when a woman dared to venture into their space.
I heard about Crossfit from my stepson who told me it had helped him get into top physical condition to play college soccer. My husband joined Crossfit Aspire first; he kept raving about how great he felt and soon I was sold on the Crossfit method of mixing cardio, weight lifting and flexibility into one workout that was short and intense. When I met Justin and Alycia McGinley, the owners of Crossfit Aspire, I knew I was in the right place. They are encouraging, motivating and thoughtful trainers who showed me how to scale workouts to my abilities, but still challenge myself. And the beauty of Crossfit Aspire is that each class is like a personal training session. Either Justin or Alycia (or both) are there to individually coach people through the class. If I were going to buy three weekly personal training sessions at my old gym, the price per month would be more than four times what I pay for Crossfit Aspire. Since I joined in August 2010, I’m comfortable doing all sorts of Olympic lifts, more confident in my physical abilities and have lost 25 pounds. Through Crossfit Aspire, I’m also part of a community devoted to eating well and fitness — and I plan on being a member for a long time.”
“Crossfit is not about just lifting heavy weights or doing obscene unnecessary amounts of cardio. It incorporates all different types of movements into one amazing workout. Since I started at Crossfit Aspire in November of 2010 I have noticed a significant increase in my overall fitness. From kettlebells to jump rope, deadlifts to overhead squats, and everything in between you never know what concoction of exercises the trainers have in store for class. Not to mention how motivating they are throughout the workout. Along with the other members you won’t find a better group of people. No other gym compares.”
“I started CrossFit in the Spring of 2008 while living in Virginia Beach, VA, and by the time we moved a year later, I was in the absolute best shape of my life. Then came pregnancy and getting used to being a mom. After over a year off and with a lot of toning and strength to regain, I joined CrossFit Aspire in June of 2010. I love the camaraderie, competitive environment, and working out somewhere that pushes people to be stronger then they think possible. I appreciate Justin and Alycia’s coaching and focus on excellent technique, which has helped me make big gains in strength and movement and keeps me from getting injured. CrossFit helps normal people, like me, a mother with a one year old, lead more functional and energized lives. It is fun to be strong!
Since starting with Aspire, I have watched my strength and conditioning increase each month. I have also been inspired to change my eating habits and focus more on good nutrition. I never thought I would get to a place where I was willing and excited to take on a 30-day nutritional challenge, but thanks to seeing others do it and the accountability of other members asking me about it, I am succeeding! CrossFit has helped me discover I can be stronger than I ever thought, and that “working out” can be a whole lot different and varied then you think. I have gotten so addicted that I am hoping to become Level 1 certified in the coming year!”

“When I was in high school I ran cross country, carried a bass drum in the marching band and played unorganized sports all the time. After high school I spent over 7 years in the Army running and doing calisthenics everyday. After that I didn’t do much. My daily exercise consisted of whatever my job at the time called for. About 2 years ago I was 250lbs and climbing and working in the call center at Comcast. I decided I need to change, so I used my Montgomery GI Bill and decided to get certified as a personal trainer. I spent 10 months taking online courses, interning and at a boot camp and learned all about how our muscular and skeletal systems worked and conflicting views on the best workout and diet for different circumstances.
During this time I also learned about CrossFit including taking a class at a CrossFit gym during the boot camp. I still followed through and got my certification (otherwise I would have had to pay back my Montgomery GI Bill for not completing the course), but I followed the main CrossFit website daily wishing there was somewhere I could do the workouts. The CrossFit programing of constantly varied functional movements done at high intensity combined with the fact that they actually defined fitness and explained nutrition in certain and easy to understand terms intrigued me. As soon as I could I went and got my CrossFit level 1 certification but still had no where to workout. Most gyms frown upon (to say the least) the types of workouts CrossFit is known for and the only affiliate in the area did not have times that fit my current schedule. I watched videos and started saving to buy the equipment to workout in my backyard when CrossFit Aspire showed up on the CrossFit website.
I called Justin and started working out in his garage now at about 255lbs and in the worst shape of my life. In short order I began to learn the movements and breathe a little easier. I lost about 20 lbs in my first month and felt great. My strength and flexibility also improved and the constant pain I had in my back since injuring it in high school had diminished greatly. After cleaning up my diet I quickly lost about 20 more pounds and it would be more if I hadn’t gone back to some of my old eating habits (I’m still working on this).
After 9 months of going to CrossFit Aspire 4-5 times a week, I have lost and kept off about 35 pounds, increased my conditioning noticeably and I am stronger than I have ever been. My backsquat has increased from 85 lbs for 5 reps to a 1 rep max of 325 lbs, my deadlift started at 185 lbs for 5 reps and is now at 405 lbs for 3 reps, my press started at 85lbs for 5 reps and is now at 155 lbs for a 1 rep max. I am now able to jump rope and am starting to get double unders, my pull-up and push-up numbers continue to grow and my 500 meter row is down to 1:42, 12 seconds faster than when I started.
I believe CrossFit is the best program for anyone wanting to improve their health and quality of life. I also believe Justin and Alycia are great trainers who genuinely care about everyone that walks through their door, which is something you won’t find in many gyms outside of CrossFit. They do a great job at scaling the workouts so that anyone can participate and benefit if they put out the effort. I am very pleased to have found CrossFit Aspire when I did and I look forward to what they have in store for us in the future.

“I joined Crossfit Aspire in January 2011, and after the first class I was hooked. When I originally heard about Crossfit, It sounded like exactly what I needed in order to reach my fitness goals and become a better athlete. Since starting Crossfit I have gotten stronger and increased my endurance. I played in my first off-season field hockey tournament a few weeks ago, and i was amazed at how much stronger and faster i am. I was able to play against college athletes that were in great shape and keep up with them. I can honestly say that Crossfit is the reason for my performance.
Crossfit has also shown me how eating healthy can affect not only your workouts but your life as well. Alycia and Justin are great trainers, and they truly care about their members overall health and fitness. Every class is challenging and required hard work, but the results are phenomenal. My sister is now a Crossfit Aspire member, and she too loves how Crossfit is changing her life for the better.”

“When I first came to Aspire I wasn’t sure what to expect or what they could offer. I had been doing Crossfit on my own for about two years before I joined, but I wasn’t sure how much I would get out of that first class. I definitely got much more than I could have ever hoped for. I was so humbled my first day – the intensity of that first workout was something I had never felt working out on my own. I was hooked. In the five months since I joined, I have made incredible gains in all major lifts. – I feel like I am hitting new PRs every week. I am able to more strict pull ups and “real” push ups than I have ever been able to do. The Crossfit community breeds people that want to be healthy. Justin and Alycia have embraced this mindset and do a wonderful job passing their wealth of knowledge onto everyone who walks in the door. Whether you have been an athlete all your life, or you have never picked up a set of weights, they will help reach whatever goals you have in mind. The constant talk about eating real food and doing natural and practical movements (picking something heavy up and putting it down) is contagious and has helped me become a healthier person overall.
Besides the obvious health benefits that Aspire offers, Justin and Alycia have built a community around their gym. Every member that joins is welcomed into a family atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable in their own abilities and want to better themselves. There are always “extra-curricular” activities such as yoga and Olympic lifting classes to help foster an overall healthy lifestyle for their members. You will always see people congregating before or after class because Crossfit Aspire has become much more than just a gym to all of us.
I am currently not able to go to class nearly as much as I would like because I commute far to work. I can honestly say that one of the main drivers of me wanting to get a job closer to home is so I can workout more at Aspire. I really look forward to all the growth that is happening at the gym and conquering new personal obstacles.”
“I had heard about Crossfit a few years back from other officers that I trained with while I was instructing at the police academy, but as a former college football player and current police officer, I stuck to the traditional weightlifting/running routine. I found myself getting complacent and bored with my workouts as I missed the camaraderie and competitiveness of the police academy and athletic team settings. Then one of my former teammates and current Federal Agent said he had been going to Crossfit and loved it so I decided to give it a try. Crossfit has, and continues to be one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. I have seen amazing physical gains in only a short period of time and have become stronger than I ever was, even during my playing days. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, with just enough push to keep me motivated and competitive. I do not think I could ever go back to a traditional gym setting. Crossfit is so much more fun, and for anyone who has ever played a team sport, you owe it to yourself to give it a try.”

I love CrossFit Aspire! Most of my life I was involved in organized sports and as I entered the adult world I found myself struggling to find an activity that kept me motivated and in shape while also providing the kind of community that you get from playing team sports. CrossFit gives me that and so much more. I love going to classes in the welcoming and supportive environment. Justin and Alycia embrace a holistic philosophy about fitness that starts in the gym, but gradually seeps into other areas of your life such as healthy eating and adequate rest. Their genuine commitment to making people lead healthier lives is contagious and their personal instruction challenges me to push myself everyday. I’m stronger, healthier and definitely happier. I have reached weight lifting goals that I never thought were possible and done workouts that I never thought I could complete. Their practical approach has given me a renewed sense of what it means to be healthy and I can’t imagine life without it. My advice for anyone who is considering CrossFit: Do it! It’ll make you feel good!
